Five Fathom Bank Lightship

Delaware Bay

Located in the Atlantic Ocean to help guide vessels to the Delaware Bay, the original lightship was recommended for establishment in 1826. Over the years several ships endured the rough weather, heavy seas and lists of repairs until the last Five Fathom Lightship ended its service in 1966. A temporary lightship was used until the Five Fathom Bank Lighted Horn Buoy was activated in 1972. This last lightship was sunk off the coast of Atlantic City to become part of an artificial reef.
